The process of a custom window treatment installation involves collaboration between designers and clients, from the initial consultation to the final reveal. Handcrafted drapery and Hunter Douglas shades are carefully selected and installed to enhance both the style and functionality of the space.
Behind the Scenes of a Custom Window Treatment Installation: From Sketch to Reality
Like any great project, it all begins with an idea and a conversation. When it comes to custom drapery, understanding the client’s vision for their space is essential. Since our drapery is entirely custom, we place immense value on our clients’ opinions and work closely with them to create something that not only meets their needs but also complements their home’s interior. Each window treatment is designed with intention to elevate the overall look and feel of the space.
We recently had the pleasure of completing a project for one of our favorite clients, who had just moved into their dream home. They envisioned custom drapery in several rooms of the house, as well as Hunter Douglas shades — a product we’re proud to offer in our studio. Here’s a glimpse into the process of bringing their vision to life:
Phase #1: The Initial Conversation
Everything begins with a discussion. During our first meeting with the client, we get a sense of their style, preferences, and how they envision their space. This is where the magic starts — understanding the mood, color palette, and fabric choices that will help make their house feel like home. Since every drapery we design is completely custom, we take this opportunity to truly listen and collaborate with our clients.
Phase #2: Presentation and Inspiration
Once we’ve gathered all the information we need from the initial meeting, we return to our studio to begin brainstorming ideas. We explore various fabric samples, considering colors, textures, patterns, and trims that we feel would work perfectly in the client's home. Price points also come into play as we narrow down our selections.
After finalizing the options, we schedule a follow-up presentation. At this stage, we present our ideas to the client, offering them multiple options to choose from. If something doesn’t quite resonate, we’re more than happy to collaborate and adjust our designs on the spot to ensure it’s the perfect fit. The goal is always to work together to create something unique.
Phase #3: Getting the “Green Light”
Once the client reviews the fabric options and we confirm the budget, we move forward to get the final approval. This is the “green light” moment — when we officially begin the process of ordering fabrics, hardware, and trims, as well as coordinating with our workroom team to discuss the specifics of the design.
At this point, everything starts to come together. We track the production timeline and keep our client informed about the estimated completion time. While the process can take 4-6 weeks on average, it’s important to note that we are not in the business of rush orders. Our drapery is handcrafted, ensuring that each piece is made with care and precision. Great things take time, and the wait will definitely be worth it.
Phase #4: Installation Day — The Big Reveal
Installation day is, without a doubt, the highlight of the entire process. After weeks of planning, designing, and crafting, we get to witness our client’s reaction as we unveil the finished product. This is when all the pieces come together — and it’s incredibly rewarding to see the custom drapery transform the space.
On installation day, we arrive with our workroom team, who is responsible for installing the drapery. As designers, we oversee the entire installation, ensuring that every detail is perfect and that the client’s vision has come to life exactly as they imagined.
Phase #5: Installing Hunter Douglas Shades
In addition to the custom drapery, we were also excited to install Hunter Douglas shades in a few key rooms of the home. In the media room, we installed the Duette collection with PowerView automation, offering the convenience of controlling the shades with just the touch of a button. These shades are equipped with a bottom-up control system, using C23 - Architella Elan 3/4" Room Darkening fabric in the elegant Platinum color, providing both style and optimal light control.
In the primary bathroom, we chose the Designer Roller collection, also featuring PowerView automation with a bottom-up control system. The fabric used here was ARG - Argos in Porcelain, adding a sleek and sophisticated touch to the space. Both of these Hunter Douglas products seamlessly blend aesthetics with functionality, ensuring our client enjoys both privacy and light control at the touch of a button.
Phase #6: Looking Ahead — The Next Chapter
Our work doesn’t stop here. After completing the window treatments in several rooms, the client is already planning the next phase: custom drapery for the primary bedroom. We look forward to continuing this collaboration and bringing even more of their vision to life!
It’s always a privilege to work on projects like this one, where we get to help our clients create spaces that truly reflect their style and personality. From sketch to reality, the journey is always rewarding — and we can’t wait to see what’s next!
